Shock confession by ex-Haitian senator reveals terrifying underbelly of President Moïse’s assassination

The dark episode of the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse continues to reveal its ramifications with the admission of guilt of former Haitian senator Joseph Joel John. Before a US federal court, he admitted to having played a key role in planning and carrying out this tragic act which shocked Haiti and the entire world.

Through this plea agreement, Joseph Joel John admitted to providing vehicles and meeting several times with the other conspirators, both in Haiti and in Florida. These meetings were intended to establish the necessary plans to carry out the assassination of Jovenel Moïse. This confession is added to the list of people indicted in the United States for their involvement in this heinous crime.

To understand the importance of this affair for the American authorities, it must be remembered that the plot was partially hatched in Florida, a state which is home to a large Haitian diaspora. Thus, the American judicial system takes charge of the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for this political murder.

Others already indicted include a retired Colombian army officer, German Rivera, who confessed in September to helping a group of mercenaries carry out the assassination. Likewise, Rodolphe Jaar, of Haitian and Chilean nationality, was sentenced in June to life in prison for providing weapons to the assassins.

The operation was carried out by a commando of more than 20 people, mainly composed of Colombian mercenaries. They broke into the private residence of Jovenel Moïse, located near the capital Port-au-Prince, and shot him dead. Initially, the plan was to kidnap him, but it evolved into a brutal assassination.

The US investigation revealed that those responsible were two men linked to the Miami-based security company CTU. Their intention was to kidnap Jovenel Moïse in order to replace him with an American-Haitian, Christian Sanon, who had presidential ambitions. In exchange for the kidnapping, they hoped to secure lucrative infrastructure and security contracts for Sanon’s future government.

Since this assassination, Haiti has been faced with a chaotic situation, marked by the rise of violent gangs which control a large part of Port-au-Prince. Faced with this crisis, the UN Security Council recently gave the green light to a multinational mission led by Kenya, which pledges to provide up to 1,000 police officers. However, the dispatch of these police officers was temporarily suspended by a Kenyan court, following a request from the opposition.

In conclusion, the admission of guilt of Joseph Joel John, former Haitian senator, represents an additional step in the resolution of the affair of the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. This affair, which shocked Haiti and the international community, continues to reveal disturbing details about the planning and execution of this tragic act. The country faces many challenges, with an unstable security situation and the need to find a viable political solution to ensure stability and democracy.
