“Hamas offensive against Israel: increased tensions in the Middle East, eight French nationals killed”

Hamas’ offensive against Israel in October 2023 has led to new tensions in the Middle East region. The fighting has been particularly intense, with rocket fire targeting Israel from Gaza and southern Lebanon. Airstrikes on Gaza have also intensified, putting the civilian population at risk.

During these clashes, eight French nationals lost their lives and twenty others are missing, according to information from the Quai d’Orsay. The international community reacted strongly to this escalation of violence, with condemnations and calls for de-escalation.

US President Joe Biden spoke out on the situation, calling Hamas’ attacks “pure evil”. He affirmed his support for Israel while calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities. The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, for his part accused Israel of violating international law with the blockade of Gaza, and pleaded in favor of continuing aid to the Palestinian Authority.

In France, pro-Palestinian demonstrations planned in Paris were banned as a security measure, fearing disturbances to public order. This decision was taken after contradictory announcements concerning the suspension of European aid to the Palestinian Authority, which were ultimately denied. The situation remains tense and evolving rapidly, raising serious concerns about a more serious escalation.

In this context, the head of American diplomacy, Antony Blinken, will soon visit Jordan, in addition to his planned visit to Israel. This trip aims to strengthen relations with countries in the region and encourage the search for a diplomatic solution.

Currently, clashes continue, with each side claiming to defend themselves against attacks perceived as unfair and illegitimate. The international community continues to call for an immediate de-escalation and the resumption of negotiations with a view to a peaceful and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
