“Launch of an ambitious project to eliminate human African trypanosomiasis in the DRC by 2030”

The National Program to Combat Human African Trypanosomiasis (PNLTHA), in partnership with international organizations such as IMTA, DNDI, PATH and CNRSC, recently launched a policy advocacy and communications project aimed at combating trypanosomiasis African human disease, also known as “sleeping sickness”.

The main objective of this project, implemented by the National Coordination for Strengthening Community Systems (CNRSC), is to improve the health of the population living in rural areas most exposed to this disease and to promote the management of community burden to contribute to its elimination by 2030.

The CNRSC decided to take over this project from an international organization, PATH, in order to consolidate the progress already made and extend the actions undertaken. National coordination covers the entire country, with an operational presence in the 26 provinces, the 500 health zones and more than 6,000 health areas. Thus, all Congolese populations will receive information on the existence of the disease, its dangers, preventive measures to take and treatment.

As part of this project, various awareness-raising actions are planned, including the organization of national days to combat human African trypanosomiasis in Kinshasa and in the provinces, consultative workshops to share best practices in the elimination of human African trypanosomiasis. disease, training to strengthen the skills of community providers, as well as the production and broadcast of radio spots and interactive programs in local languages.

The DRC currently has 22 provinces endemic for human African trypanosomiasis, the most affected provinces being Kwilu, Kwango and Mai Ndombe. In order to intensify the fight against this disease, it is essential to strengthen awareness and coordination efforts across the country.

It should be noted that the national day for the fight against human African trypanosomiasis is celebrated each year on January 30, and for this edition, the chosen theme is “Let’s mobilize to eliminate sleeping sickness in the DRC”.

Thanks to the joint efforts of PNLTHA, CNRSC and its partners, the hope is that the Congolese population will be better informed and warned against human African trypanosomiasis and that measures will be taken to completely eliminate this disease by 2030.
