“The registration of candidacies for the presidential election in the DRC marks the start of a historic competition”

The process of registering candidates for the presidential election in the DRC ended on October 8, 2023, marking an important step in the preparation of this crucial election scheduled for December 20 of the same year. The Independent National Electoral Commission (Céni) closed its registration office after a month of submitting candidacies.

In total, no less than 24 candidates were officially registered by the Ceni, among whom are well-known figures in Congolese political life. Among them, we find opposition heavyweights such as Moïse Katumbi, Martin Fayulu, Denis Mukwege and Matata Ponyo. It is interesting to note that the majority of candidates are running as independents, like the current president, Félix Tshisekedi. The only woman among the contenders, Marie-Josée Ifoku is trying her luck again after her candidacy five years ago.

However, some applications were rejected due to issues such as non-payment of deposit or lack of mandatory documents. This filtering process is important to ensure that only serious and legitimate candidates participate in the election.

Now that the applications have been registered, the CENI has 15 days to publish its provisional list, which will then be transmitted to the Constitutional Court for examination and settlement of possible disputes. By November 8 at the latest, we will have a better idea of the candidates ultimately selected for the presidential election. The final list will be published on November 18, just before the start of the electoral campaign.

It is still too early to predict the outcome of this presidential election in the DRC, but it is clear that the stakes are high. Candidates will have to convince voters of their ability to solve the problems affecting the country and to carry out the reforms necessary to guarantee a better future. The coming months will therefore be crucial for the country and its democracy.

In conclusion, the registration of candidacies for the presidential election in the DRC is an important step in the electoral process. With a total of 24 candidates, including opposition figures and independents, the race for the presidency is open. It now remains to be seen who will be selected to participate in this historic election scheduled for December 2023.
