The political primaries in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are experiencing a revival, with the emergence of a new initiative within the electoral platform “Alternative for a New Congo” (ACN). These primaries aim to offer a solid and democratic alternative to citizens during the December 2023 elections.
The ACN, made up of civil society organizations, citizen movements, political organizations and independent personalities, has set itself the objective of putting an end to the predatory system of governance in the DRC. It aims to strengthen democratic culture, national cohesion and the fundamental values of the country.
The primary process within the ACN aims to give members back their decision-making power, often captured by a political elite. This participatory process allows candidates from civil society to present their visions for a new Congo and concrete solutions to the country’s challenges.
The choice of candidate for the presidential election was made through different stages, including the presentation of candidacies, preparatory sessions and public debates. The aim was to stimulate internal democracy within the ACN, combat moral authority and propose an alternative political offer based on feasible solutions.
The primaries were also an opportunity to highlight the priorities of the Social Contract resulting from the “Congo Tolingi” popular consultations, developed in collaboration with the Center for Studies for Social Action (CEPAS). The candidates thus presented their visions based on the expectations and aspirations of the Congolese population.
This new approach to primaries arouses real interest and demonstrates a desire for profound change in the Congolese political landscape. It emphasizes internal democracy, the participation of young people and women, and the search for concrete solutions for the development of the country.
By offering a solid and democratic alternative, the primaries within the ACN could contribute to qualitatively renewing the Congolese political class and meeting the expectations of citizens during the next elections in the DRC.
