The recent shocking video of the filmed executions of two civilians in the town of Guzand, in the English-speaking northwest of Cameroon, continues to arouse strong and legitimate emotion. Amnesty International joins the condemnations and calls for an urgent and impartial investigation so that these crimes do not go unpunished. The authorities, for their part, announced the opening of an investigation.
In its press release, Amnesty International describes these executions as “a new manifestation of the horror experienced by the inhabitants of the English-speaking regions”. The NGO therefore calls on the authorities to carry out a rapid and impartial investigation in order to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. This condemnation from Amnesty International echoes the outraged reactions recorded since the video was broadcast, both in the media and on social networks.
The video shows two young men who appear to be undergoing a semblance of trial in front of armed militiamen, before being shot several times in broad daylight, under the stunned gaze of a crowd, including relatives and members of their families. An armed group claiming to be the imaginary government of Ambazonia claimed responsibility for these executions.
Civil society and the political class strongly denounced this tragedy. Some, like Maurice Kamto of the MRC, described these acts as “unspeakable barbarity” and called for the opening of a sincere political dialogue to resolve the crisis shaking the English-speaking regions of Cameroon.
It is urgent that light be shed on these heinous executions and that justice be done to the victims. This case highlights the need for concerted action to end the violence and find a peaceful solution to the ongoing Anglophone crisis in Cameroon. Let us hope that this case serves as a catalyst for concrete and lasting measures to guarantee the security and fundamental rights of all Cameroonian citizens.
