“Uganda accused of moving border posts in the DRC: Tensions and concerns in the eastern region of the country”

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) once again finds itself faced with a worrying situation linked to the alleged movement of border markers by Uganda in the eastern part of the country. This affair arouses strong reactions both politically and on social networks, thus amplifying tensions between the two neighboring nations.

According to local sources in Rutshuru territory, in North Kivu province, Uganda has installed new border posts between the village of Mungo, near Bunagana, and Musezero hill. An incursion of nearly three kilometers inside Congolese territory which greatly worries the population already affected by the presence of the M23 rebellion.

Faced with these allegations, the Congolese government is carefully monitoring the situation and using diplomatic channels to resolve this sensitive issue. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the DRC, accompanied by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense and Veterans Affairs, is looking into this matter in order to obtain precise information and find an adequate solution. It is clearly stated that the perimeters of the border markers, established for a long time, cannot be modified unilaterally.

In this context, National Deputy Juvenal Munubo addressed an oral question with debate to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in order to obtain clarification on the situation on the ground. This affair arouses great concern within the Congolese political landscape, highlighting the importance of preserving the territorial integrity of the DRC.

For its part, the Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Kinshasa categorically rejected the allegations, describing them as “false”. The embassy recalls Uganda’s attachment to the principle of the inviolability of borders inherited from the colonial era, emphasizing that any modification of international borders between States cannot be done unilaterally.

This delicate situation highlights the challenges faced by many African countries in the management and preservation of territorial borders. The DRC and Uganda will need to ensure constructive communication and maintain open diplomatic channels in order to resolve this issue in a peaceful and mutually beneficial manner.
