“The project to construct the border post between the DRC and Zambia at Chalwe: a major step forward for economic development and regional connectivity”

The project to build the DRC-Zambia border post at Chalwe is close to becoming a reality. Initiated by Presidents Félix Tshisekedi and Hakainde Hichlema, this project involves the construction of a modern bridge over the Luapula River and the paving of the Kasomeno – Kasenga – Chalwe – Mwenda road.

This project is of particular importance for both countries, but also for the East African region in general. Indeed, by linking Lubumbashi to Dar-es-Salam via Zambia, this new road offers a more direct alternative to the Kasumbalesa road, thus reducing the distance by almost 300 km.

Apart from the economic and logistical benefits, this project will also contribute to the development of the Kasenga and Kasomeno areas, which have long been neglected due to the dilapidated condition of the road. For the inhabitants of these regions, the construction of this border crossing means improved accessibility, job creation and significant economic development potential.

The 345-meter cable-stayed bridge will be accompanied by one-stop border crossings and toll stations allowing for smooth trade flows. In addition, these infrastructures will be equipped with computerized systems to facilitate registration procedures and reduce administrative hassles.

Construction work on the Chalwe Bridge is estimated to take three years, with a total cost of $252 million financed by the two countries. The local population is delighted with the progress of this project, which will open new perspectives for economic development and regional connectivity.

In conclusion, the project to construct the border post between the DRC and Zambia at Chalwe marks a significant step forward in strengthening economic and commercial relations between the two countries. It also opens up new development opportunities for the surrounding areas, thus contributing to improving the living conditions of local populations.
