“The presidential election in the DRC: the political battle intensifies between the opposition and the regime in place”

75 days before the next presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo scheduled for December 20, the country is preparing for an intense political battle between the opposition and the regime in place. Among the opposition candidates, we find strong figures such as Moïse Katumbi and Martin Fayulu.

The candidacy of Moïse Katumbi, former governor of Katanga, was submitted on Wednesday October 4 to the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). Accompanied by executives from his Ensemble pour la République party, he denounced the current regime led by President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, accusing his collaborators of forming an “oligarchic” class which appropriates the country’s wealth to the detriment of the population.

Moïse Katumbi affirms that the country needs leaders of integrity who work for the good of the people and not for their personal interests. He also underlines the need to put an end to Rwandan aggression in the east of the country and to develop the Congolese economy.

This is the second time in five years that Moïse Katumbi is in opposition against Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi. After being close to Martin Fayulu and a member of the opposition coalition “Lamuka”, he allied himself with President Tshisekedi in 2020 before leaving him two years later and returning to the opposition.

For Moïse Katumbi, the presidential election is an opportunity to change the regime in place and to give a chance to new leaders of integrity who will work for the development of the country and the satisfaction of the needs of the people.

The electoral campaign is expected to begin soon, promising a period of intense debates and political confrontations between the different candidates. The Congolese people are impatiently awaiting this election which could mark a decisive turning point in the history of the country. To be followed closely.
