Title: The Chalwe Bridge between the DRC and Zambia: an ambitious project to facilitate trade and regional development
Introduction :
The village of Chalwe, located 230 km from Lubumbashi, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, will soon play a major role in cross-border trade with Zambia. Indeed, Presidents Felix Tshisekedi and Hakainde Hichlema recently launched work on the “Kasomeno – Mwenda” project, which provides for the construction of a cable-stayed bridge over the Luapula River, connecting the two countries. This new modern border post will help boost trade and economic development in the region.
The “Kasomeno – Mwenda” project:
The project, jointly financed by the DRC and Zambia, aims to build a cable-stayed bridge with a span of 345 meters over the Luapula River, near the village of Chalwe. The Kasomeno – Kasenga – Chalwe – Mwenda road will also be asphalted to facilitate vehicle movement. On either side of the bridge, one-stop border crossings, toll plazas, parking lots and warehouses will be set up, simplifying customs procedures for travelers and goods.
The advantages of the Chalwe Bridge:
This new bridge is of vital importance for the populations of both countries and for the East African Community (EAC) region. In particular, it will make it possible to connect Lubumbashi to Dar-es-Salam more quickly by avoiding a 300 km detour via the Kasumbalesa road. This new route of communication will promote trade and strengthen economic ties between the DRC and Zambia.
Regional dynamics:
The Chalwe Bridge also represents a development opportunity for the Kasenga and Kasomeno areas, which have long remained marginalized due to the dilapidated state of the roads. The modernization of these infrastructures will help stimulate the local economy and offer new prospects to young people in the region, particularly in terms of jobs. The presence of Prime Minister Sama Lukonde during the launch of the project demonstrates the importance given to regional development.
Conclusion :
The Chalwe Bridge will be a true symbol of cooperation and development between the DRC and Zambia. By facilitating trade and strengthening economic ties, this project will help improve the living conditions of local populations and promote regional development. The modernization of transport infrastructure is a major challenge for African countries, and the Chalwe Bridge is an important step in this dynamic.
