“The modernization of the Kasumbalesa customs post: an essential lever for the economic development of the DRC”

Title: The modernization of the Kasumbalesa customs post: a catalyst for the economic development of the DRC

Introduction :

The Kasumbalesa customs post, on the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia, was recently equipped with modern infrastructure and a system to maximize customs revenue. This initiative was inaugurated by President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi and aims to accelerate the processing of customs files, streamline cross-border trade and promote the economic development of the region. In this article, we will explore the details of this modernization and the benefits it offers for the DRC.

Development :

The new modern 2,600 square meter building housing the customs services is equipped with all the necessary equipment to ensure efficient processing of files. In addition, an 8-kilometer reinforced concrete bypass road has been built, which will relieve traffic congestion around the customs post. Bonded warehouses, import-export parking lots and accommodation for customs officers have also been set up to optimize operations.

This modernization was made possible thanks to a public-private partnership between the General Directorate of Customs and Excise (DGDA) and the Congolese company TRAFIGO SARL, managed by Magalie Kayitesi Raway. TRAFIGO SARL has developed a reliable and secure system for maximizing customs revenue, which has made it possible to significantly increase the DGDA’s revenue. This system is based on efficient tax and royalty traceability software, transparent procedures integrated into the banking system and a management policy focused on ethics and training of human resources.

Thanks to this partnership and the modernization of the customs post, the speed in the processing of customs files has been improved, which promotes a faster turnover of vehicles and facilitates trade between the DRC and Zambia. In addition, the secure channeling of state revenue helps strengthen the resources needed to respond to the challenges of this strategic border and promote economic development in the region.

Conclusion :

The modernization of the Kasumbalesa customs post is an important step towards the economic development of the DRC. Thanks to an effective public-private partnership and a customs revenue maximization system, the DGDA has succeeded in improving the processing of customs files and significantly increasing its revenue. This initiative will promote the fluidity of trade, stimulate economic activity and contribute to the growth of the region. This is a concrete example of collaboration between public and private actors to promote the economic development of the DRC..
