“The victims of the Nyiragongo volcano refuse to leave the Kanyaruchinya camp until their needs are taken into account”

“The victims of the Nyiragongo volcano refuse to leave the Kanyaruchinya camp without guarantees of support”

Since the volcanic eruption which took place in 2021, the victims of the Nyiragongo volcano located at the Kanyaruchinya camp, in the territory of Nyiragongo, in North Kivu, have expressed their discontent and their desire to stay there as long as they did not obtain any support measures from the Congolese government and international organizations.

According to testimonies collected, no support in terms of construction tools has been provided to the victims since the eruption. They emphasize that their priority is to rebuild their homes destroyed by the volcano, but without the necessary resources, they find themselves in a precarious situation.

Some victims say they have noticed that other people affected by the disaster have already received assistance for the construction of their houses, in the form of boards, tarpaulins and rafters. This disparity in reconstruction efforts creates a feeling of injustice and frustration among those affected.

A civil society representative present on site supported their demands and called on the Congolese government to listen to their calls for help. It calls on humanitarian organizations to provide support measures, including food and construction materials.

Currently, more than 800 households affected by the Nyiragongo volcano still reside in the Kanyaruchinya camp, near Makao. Their precarious situation highlights the urgency of a concrete response from the Congolese authorities and international organizations to help them rebuild their lives.

It is essential that those affected by the Nyiragongo volcano receive adequate support to rebuild and regain some stability after this devastating disaster. Let us hope that their demands will be heard and that a satisfactory solution can be found as soon as possible.
