New attack in the Gao region, Mali: the situation is deteriorating
This Sunday, October 1, a new attack was perpetrated against a position of the Malian army in the locality of Bamba, located in the Gao region. The heavily armed attackers targeted a Malian military camp, provoking intense fighting between the Malian armed forces and armed groups.
This attack follows a previous attack which took place at the beginning of September, also in the locality of Bamba, this time perpetrated by armed groups from the former Malian rebellion. These attacks reveal a worrying security situation in the Gao region.
Malian armed groups, grouped within the Permanent Strategic Framework (CSP), claimed responsibility for the attack and claim to have taken control of the military camp. Witnesses present on site confirm having seen the ex-rebels inside the position of the regular troops, before leaving the scene with military equipment.
This new attack raises questions about the effectiveness of international mediation and the Algiers Peace Agreement Monitoring Committee. Despite the efforts made by the UN Mission in Mali (Minusma), member of the Monitoring Committee, tensions persist and the security situation continues to deteriorate.
Algeria, which plays a leading role in mediation between the Malian government and armed groups, is also facing the failure of the peace agreement signed in 2015. The Malian government seeks to regain control of all military camps in the country, particularly those in the Kidal region, in the hands of the former rebellion. For their part, the armed groups aim to defend themselves and advance towards the south of the country.
The increase in attacks and the increasing sophistication of the war equipment used by armed groups raise serious concerns within international mediation. It is becoming urgent to find solutions to restore peace and stability in the Gao region, as well as throughout Mali.
In conclusion, this new attack in the Gao region highlights the deterioration of the security situation in Mali. Despite the efforts of international mediation, the Algiers peace agreement seems to be shattered. It is imperative to find solutions to stem the violence and establish a climate of lasting peace in the country.
