“Football as a tool for reconciliation: when a Central African city uses sport to unite communities”

In a world where tensions and intercommunity conflicts persist, it is encouraging to see positive initiatives coming from different countries. In the Central African Republic, the town of Ndélé recently organized a football match between the Christian and Muslim communities, with the aim of promoting reconciliation and strengthening living together.

After years of violence and divisions, the practice of football was chosen as a means of bringing communities together and supporting the reconciliation process. The match was organized by the city authorities, who wanted to send a strong message in favor of peace and harmony.

From the start of the day, the excitement was palpable in the streets of Ndélé. Residents, both Christians and Muslims, mobilized to go to the municipal stadium and support their team. Businesses closed their doors, neighborhoods emptied and even surrounding villages participated in the event by sending supporters.

Some football fans even traveled dozens of kilometers on foot to watch this historic match. They believed in the ability of football to foster lasting reconciliation between communities. As one of the supporters, Bachirou, pointed out: “We made several attempts at reconciliation, but it did not work. Football must bring peace to our city.”

Local authorities were inspired by the Nigerian model, where the national team was able to unify the country by winning the African Cup of Nations in 1980. They recalled that security and peace are questions of will and that sport can play an essential role in promoting living together.

Kick-off was at 3 p.m., in front of a packed stadium. The players of AS Cobra and the Elephants of Ndélé competed against each other in a spirit of fair play and brotherhood. The teams were made up of both Christians and Muslims, symbolizing newfound unity.

Beyond the result, which ended in a draw, the importance of this meeting lay in the joy and celebration that reigned in the stands. Supporters shared chewing gum, water and tea, demonstrating the newly established solidarity between the communities.

This football match demonstrated once again the magic of this sport, capable of transcending divisions and creating strong bonds between individuals. As Johnny, AS Cobra player, pointed out: “Football is very important in a country. Look at how it is reconciling us. That’s the magic of football.”

These kinds of initiatives show that sport can be a powerful tool for reconciliation and peacebuilding in divided societies. By encouraging mutual respect, tolerance and fair play, football can help break down barriers and promote unity.

Hopefully other parts of the world can learn from these positive examples and use sport as a way to foster dialogue and understanding between communities. Because, as Emaus, coach of the Elephants of Ndélé, said so well: “Football is very important for young people. Now, thanks to him, we say no to manipulation.”
