The rehabilitation of the Budana hydroelectric power station: a major step forward for the Nizi mineral processing plant

The rehabilitation of the Budana hydroelectric power station to power the Nizi mineral processing plant, in the territory of Djugu, in Ituri, is a major project which aims to provide a stable and sustainable source of energy for development of the region. This initiative, led by Société Minière de Kilo Moto (SOKIMO), demonstrates the commitment of the Managing Director, Pistis Bonongo, to invest in critical infrastructure to support the mining industry.

Despite the financial challenges facing SOKIMO, the general management has allocated a substantial fund for the rehabilitation of the Budana hydroelectric power station. This power plant, in service since 1940, has three turbines, two of which had been out of service for several years. SOKIMO engineers were tasked with this rehabilitation, which included transporting the necessary parts from Kampala, Uganda.

The rehabilitation of the plant aims to resolve leakage issues and restore the original power of the turbines, thus ensuring optimal operation and reliable electricity supply for the Nizi mineral processing plant. Indeed, it is crucial to have a stable source of electrical energy to carry out mineral processing operations and guarantee the productivity of the factory.

SOKIMO has established a partnership with the government of Ituri province for the realization of this project, with the support of the local population, in particular that of Budana, the main beneficiary of the electrical energy generated by the plant. rehabilitated.

The completion of the rehabilitation is planned in the coming months, and the production of the first gold bar is expected in December 2023. This project will help boost the region’s economy and create employment opportunities for the local population. .

The rehabilitation of the Budana hydroelectric power station is a concrete example of SOKIMO’s commitment to sustainable development and infrastructure improvement in mining areas. It also demonstrates the importance of electrical power in the mining sector and its essential role in ensuring efficient and responsible exploitation of natural resources.

In conclusion, the rehabilitation of the Budana hydroelectric power station is a significant step forward for SOKIMO and for the Djugu region in Ituri. This project will ensure a reliable source of energy for the Nizi mineral processing plant and open up new prospects for economic development in the region.
