Rehabilitation of the Salamabila-Uvira road section in the DRC: new hope for opening up the region

The rehabilitation of the road section linking Salamabila to Uvira in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was officially launched by the Governor of Maniema province, Afani Idrissa Mangala. This initiative marks the start of the implementation of specifications signed between the mining company Strategos Mining and the local authorities. The work, financed by the mining company, aims to open up the province of Maniema and open new prospects for economic development for the region.

Long neglected and in poor condition, the Salamabila-Uvira road section is of crucial importance for the province of Maniema. This long-awaited rehabilitation is seen as a breath of fresh air for the inhabitants of the region, who depend on this road for the supply of goods from neighboring South Kivu. By facilitating trade and strengthening links with the neighboring province, the rehabilitation of this strategic road should stimulate the economic development of the region and improve the quality of life of its inhabitants.

Governor Afani Idrissa Mangala welcomed the positive response of the local community to the demands made regarding this project. He highlighted the efforts made to obtain the support of the mining company Strategos, which responded favorably to the requests of the local community, especially regarding the rehabilitation of the Salamabila-Uvira road.

However, the success of this project also relies on the active contribution of the local population. The Governor appealed to all actors, including militiamen and armed groups present in the region, to cease their activities and promote development. He underlined the Head of State’s support for this initiative and the importance of collaboration between local actors and the private sector to improve infrastructure and promote regional development.

In addition to the rehabilitation of the road, another important aspect of the project is the signing of specifications between the local community of Salamabila and the mining company Strategos Mining. These specifications provide in particular for the transfer of part of the mining area to artisanal diggers, thus responding to the demands of the local community and helping to ease the tensions which led to the closure of mining in 2017.

The rehabilitation of the Salamabila-Uvira road section in the DRC therefore represents an important step forward in opening up the Maniema province. It opens new prospects for economic development and strengthens links with neighboring regions.. However, the success of this project will depend on the commitment and collaboration of all stakeholders involved, in order to guarantee smooth and secure access to markets and resources, and thus promote the sustainable development of the region.
