“Timbuktu: The easing of the blockade offers a breath of hope to the population”

After weeks of blockade imposed by the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (Jnim) on the city of Timbuktu in Mali, a glimmer of hope is finally on the horizon. According to local sources, the Jnim would have agreed to gradually ease the blockade, thus allowing the start of resupplying the city.

The gradual lifting of the blockade has already started, with the reopening of the roads linking Timbuktu to Tonka and Goundam, which are no longer threatened. However, access to goods vehicles from Algeria and Mauritania still remains restricted, but this is also expected to be released in the coming days. In addition, water transport is expected to resume in the near future.

It was Houka-Houka Ag Alhousseini, former Islamic judge of Timbuktu, who would have played a key role in the negotiations for the easing of the blockade. He serves as an intermediary between the Malian authorities and the Jnim of Iyad Ag Ghaly, with whom he is known to be close. Thanks to the joint efforts of traditional and religious notables in the region, a compromise was reached last week.

The easing of the blockade is good news for the inhabitants of Timbuktu, who have suffered shortages and price increases since the start of the blockade. Although some residents have noticed an improvement in the situation, others remain skeptical and say the changes are not yet noticeable. However, no shortages are reported, although some prices remain high, particularly for gasoline.

It is important to emphasize that the partial lifting of the blockade is not a truce in the combat actions carried out by the Jnim. Indeed, this jihadist group claimed responsibility for an attack on a military camp near Timbuktu, thus demonstrating its determination to continue its actions despite ongoing negotiations.

Despite lingering doubts and challenges, the easing of the blockade represents a step forward for the residents of Timbuktu. Let us hope that negotiations continue and that the situation continues to improve, allowing a return to normal for this emblematic city of Mali.
