Political Return: Augustin Kabuya’s scathing response to Corneille Nangaa
In a recent interview given to a local radio, Augustin Kabuya, Secretary General of the UDPS, reacted in a muscular manner to the comments of Corneille Nangaa, the former president of the CENI. The latter had mentioned a secret agreement between Joseph Kabila and Félix Tshisekedi to allow the latter to access power. According to Kabuya, these accusations are nothing other than the result of Nangaa’s frustration following the loss of his mining plots.
Augustin Kabuya did not mince his words in describing Nangaa as a “frustrated trader” who is seeking to settle scores with Félix Tshisekedi for personal reasons. He claims that Nangaa tried on several occasions to request his intervention to recover his lost mining squares in the Haut-Uele region. This demonization campaign led by Nangaa would therefore be motivated by his own disappointment and not by political reasons.
The Secretary General of the UDPS also refuted the existence of an agreement between Tshisekedi and Kabila aimed at rigging the results of the presidential election. According to him, the popular jubilation observed after the announcement of the results testifies to the sincerity of the vote. However, he recognizes the existence of a political agreement between Cap pour le Changement (CACH) and the Common Front for Congo (FCC), signed in July 2019 for the sharing of positions within the government.
This scathing response from Augustin Kabuya highlights the political tensions that persist in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It also highlights the importance of economic interests and personal rivalries in the Congolese political landscape. As the debate around the secret agreement between Kabila and Tshisekedi continues to rage, it is essential to remain vigilant and take a step back from political discourse.
