“North Korea enshrines its status as a nuclear state in its Constitution: a worrying escalation of tensions on the Korean peninsula”

In his latest speech, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un announced that North Korea’s status as a nuclear state had been enshrined in the country’s Constitution. This decision, which further strengthens North Korea’s position as a nuclear power, rules out any hope of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Kim Jong-un said at the People’s Congress meeting that “North Korea’s nuclear force-building policy has become permanent as the basic law of the state.” This decision was described as a historic event by the North Korean leader, who believes that it significantly strengthens national defense capabilities.

However, this announcement only increases the already existing tensions in the region. Kim Jong-un also accused the United States, South Korea and Japan of forming a “triangular military alliance” that poses a real threat to North Korea. According to him, this alliance is the main cause of war and aggression in Asia.

This decision by North Korea to include its status as a nuclear state in its Constitution comes in addition to the multiple prohibited weapons tests carried out by the country this year. Relations between the two Koreas are also at an all-time low, with attempts at denuclearization talks failing.

This development raises concerns about a possible seventh nuclear test by North Korea. Western observers also fear that Kim Jong-un’s visit to Russia could strengthen ties between the two countries and allow North Korea to circumvent international sanctions.

In conclusion, the inclusion of North Korea’s nuclear state status in its Constitution constitutes a further step towards the consolidation of its nuclear power. This heightens tensions in the region and makes denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula even more difficult to achieve. It is therefore crucial that the States concerned find diplomatic solutions to ease tensions and promote peace in the region.
