Teachers in the Djugu 2 Primary, Secondary and Technical Education (EPST) sub-division have decided to temporarily suspend their strike which had been going on since the start of the 2023-2024 school year. This decision was taken during an extraordinary general meeting held at Linga 2 primary school.
The teachers’ union justified this suspension by mentioning the reaction of Caritas, the routing of their demands to the competent authorities and other factors. The general assembly noted that the teachers’ demands have been heard by the authorities, but that certain problems remain before being able to fully resume school activities. Indeed, Caritas has not yet received the funds intended for the payment of salaries for the month of August 2023, the list of salaries for the month of September has not yet been produced by the Ministry of the Budget, and the files regarding new hires and promotions are still being processed by the Ministry of Budget and Finance.
However, despite these obstacles, teachers decided to resume classes on Thursday, September 28 in government schools in the sub-division. This decision demonstrates their desire to find solutions and allow students to resume their studies in the best possible conditions.
It is important to emphasize that this teachers’ strike was motivated by the late payment of their salaries, which had a negative impact on their financial situation and their motivation to exercise their profession. The decision to temporarily suspend the strike movement shows a desire for dialogue and the search for solutions on the part of teachers.
This situation highlights the challenges faced by teachers in the DRC, particularly in rural areas and remote regions. It is essential to take measures to improve the working conditions of teachers, ensure regular and fair payment of their salaries, and guarantee quality education for all the country’s children.
In conclusion, the temporary suspension of the strike by the inter-union of teachers of the EPST Djugu 2 sub-division marks an important step in the search for solutions to improve the situation of teachers and allow students to continue their studies in favorable conditions. This decision shows the desire of teachers to find solutions and continue to play their essential role in education in the DRC.
