The trial of Mohamed Lamine Aberouz, accused of complicity in the assassination of police officer Jean-Baptiste Salvaing and his partner Jessica Schneider in Magnanville, begins today in Paris. This tragic event, which dates back more than seven years, has deeply shaken France and aroused strong emotions within the police community.
Mohamed Lamine Aberouz, aged 30, is being prosecuted for “complicity in the assassination of a person holding public authority”, “criminal terrorist association” and “complicity in kidnapping” in relation to a terrorist enterprise. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment.
The prosecution maintains that Mohamed Lamine Aberouz played a key role in setting up the attack. He would have designated the couple of police officers as a target, by connecting to the victims’ computer to view photographs of Jean-Baptiste Salvaing. Traces of his DNA were also found on the wrist rest of the computer used to claim the assassination.
Mohamed Lamine Aberouz’s lawyers plead his innocence, claiming that he went to a prayer room on the evening of the attack. They insist that Larossi Abballa, the attacker, was a “lone wolf” who did not need an accomplice.
This trial raises important questions about the state’s responsibility in monitoring radicalized individuals. Larossi Abballa was already known to the police and had been convicted in 2013 for acts related to terrorism. The defense of Mohamed Lamine Aberouz denounces a failure of the authorities in monitoring this individual.
