“The extension of Kinshasa: a bold response to urban saturation in the DRC”

The project to extend the city province of Kinshasa: a response to urban saturation

The city of Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is facing exponential urban growth. To deal with this saturation, the Congolese government launched the project to extend the city province of Kinshasa, an ambitious initiative aimed at creating new spaces for urban development.

This project, led by the Minister of State in charge of Urban Planning and Housing, Pius Muabilu Mbayu Mukala, aims to resolve the problems of congestion and lack of infrastructure in the Congolese capital. It is particularly inspired by the administrative city “Al-Masa Capital” located in Egypt, known for its effective urban planning.

According to the project model, the extension of the city of Kinshasa will extend over 30,000 hectares, around forty kilometers from the city center and close to N’Djili airport. This space will include roads, areas dedicated to economic and agri-food activities, as well as infrastructure such as the government city, a convention center and hospitals.

The first phase of the project, with an estimated cost of $4 billion, will last five years. To finance this crucial step, partnerships with foreign investors are being discussed. The Senegalese architect Pierre Goudiaby Atepa, who designed the project, is in regular contact with the Congolese authorities to move forward with its realization.

This extension of the city of Kinshasa represents a real development opportunity for the Congolese capital. It will help relieve congestion in the city center, create new jobs and modernize urban infrastructure. In addition, it will help improve the quality of life of residents by offering new living and leisure spaces.

The establishment of a strategic committee responsible for supervising this extension project is also a key point. This governance framework must ensure the coordination and good management of the different entities involved in the project, in order to ensure its success.

In conclusion, the project to extend the city province of Kinshasa is an ambitious initiative which aims to respond to the urban challenges facing the Congolese capital. By creating new spaces for urban development, this project will help improve the quality of life of residents and stimulate economic development in the region.
