The importance of technical and vocational education in the Democratic Republic of Congo
During its 114th meeting, the Council of Ministers of the Democratic Republic of Congo approved the bill authorizing the ratification of the UNESCO convention on technical and vocational education. This decision demonstrates the Congolese government’s commitment to strengthening the role of vocational training and trades in the country’s socioeconomic development efforts.
The bill was presented by Antoinette Kipulu Kabenga, Minister of Vocational Training and Trades, and aims to realize the government’s desire to promote the creation of knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to improve employability, adaptability and the transition to green and digital sectors.
The ratification of the UNESCO convention on technical and vocational education will allow the DRC to broaden its scope of action in this area. Indeed, this agreement encompasses all forms and levels of technical and vocational education, whether educational establishments or cooperative programs with companies.
This decision is also accompanied by the upcoming holding of the first round table of ministers of education and technical and vocational training of the SADC (Southern African Development Community). This meeting will make it possible to exchange and share experiences on the community’s priorities, in order to promote quality professional training adapted to the needs of the labor market.
Technical and vocational education is of particular importance in the Congolese context, where many economic and social challenges persist. By training young people in technical professions and providing them with appropriate skills, the DRC will be able to stimulate its economic development and contribute to the reduction of unemployment and poverty.
In conclusion, the ratification of the UNESCO convention on technical and vocational education demonstrates the commitment of the Congolese government to establish quality vocational training for young people. This approach aims to promote their professional integration and contribute to the socio-economic development of the country. Holding the round table of ministers from the region will also strengthen exchanges and cooperation in this area.
