The Canal+ group is facing a delicate situation in Cameroon. The National Communication Council (CNC), the authority responsible for regulating the media sector, has ordered Canal+ to suspend the broadcast of its channel Canal+ Elles in the country. This decision follows complaints regarding programs broadcast on this channel, deemed obscene and promoting homosexuality, a practice which is repressed in Cameroon.
The CNC recalls that warnings had already been sent to Canal+ International on June 12, 2023. Discussions had been initiated with the group to find appropriate solutions, such as the use of a parental code or the review of programs for comply with the laws and customs of the country. However, these commitments remained without effect, the incriminated programs continuing to be broadcast on Canal+ Elles.
Consequently, the Canal+ group was ordered to immediately suspend the broadcast of the Canal+ Elles channel in Cameroon until further notice. This decision was taken on September 22, but the channel is still present in the bouquet and continues to be broadcast freely in Cameroon, more than three days after the CNC’s decision.
This case raises questions about the responsibility of the media in respecting a country’s laws and values. The CNC reminds that the programs broadcast must comply with the laws in force and respect the customs of the country. It is therefore expected that the Canal+ group will take the necessary measures to rectify the situation and adapt its programs to the requirements of Cameroon.
It should be noted that this decision by the CNC was taken in the context of a repression of homosexuality in Cameroon. In this country, homosexuality is considered a crime punishable by prison sentences. The media therefore have a responsibility not to promote behavior considered illegal and contrary to local values.
In conclusion, the Canal+ group is ordered to suspend the broadcast of the Canal+ channel Elles in Cameroon following complaints concerning programs deemed obscene and promoting homosexuality. This case raises questions about the media’s responsibility to respect a country’s laws and values. The Canal+ group is expected to take the necessary measures to comply with Cameroon’s requirements.
