President Félix Tshisekedi’s speech at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly was marked by crucial issues for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Among the points discussed, the President insisted on the need to accelerate the withdrawal of the UN Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) so that the country can fully assume its stability. According to him, the peacekeeping missions deployed for 25 years have failed to resolve the numerous armed conflicts ravaging the country.
President Tshisekedi also deplored Rwanda’s support for M23 terrorists and welcomed the sanctions taken by the United States against this country. He asked the UN Security Council to sanction all those responsible for serious crimes committed in the DRC and stressed the importance of not granting dialogue to the M23, which continues to violate the commitments made within the framework of the processes of peace of Luanda and Nairobi.
Finally, the President confirmed the holding of general elections in December, while respecting transparency, inclusiveness and equal opportunities. Invitations were extended to international institutions and non-governmental organizations to observe the vote.
This speech by President Félix Tshisekedi highlights his determination to take control of the destiny of the DRC and ensure the stability of the country. The gradual withdrawal of MONUSCO, the fight against armed groups and the holding of elections are all major challenges facing the President. Let us hope that these actions will allow the DRC to progress towards true stability and prosperity.
