The 18 police officers from the Civil Protection Unit of Bunia (Ituri) recently completed their training as firefighters. For five weeks, they learned different intervention techniques to put out fires and protect the population of Bunia if necessary.
The growing city of Bunia is seeing more and more houses and gas stations being built. It was therefore crucial to train firefighters capable of intervening in the event of a fire. The Commander of the Civil Protection Police Unit, Désiré Mboma, welcomed this timely training to meet the growing needs of the city.
The trained police officers expressed confidence in their skills and called on the population of Bunia to trust them. They are ready to intervene quickly and efficiently to control fires of any origin.
MONUSCO Deputy Head of Office, Leopold Gnonke, stressed that this training is part of efforts to protect civilians and support the stabilization of the DRC during this transition period. He assured that MONUSCO is ready to provide reinforcement if necessary.
However, despite this training, the town of Bunia only has one fire truck, offered by local economic operators. The city mayor therefore underlines that it is necessary to increase the number of fire trucks as well as to acquire appropriate equipment and materials to allow the new firefighters to intervene in the best conditions.
This training of police officers as firefighters is an important step in strengthening fire safety in Bunia. Thanks to their rapid and effective intervention, the population will be better protected against the risks of fire that can occur in a rapidly expanding city.
