“A woman takes the reins of the special jurisdiction for children in Kinshasa/Kinkole, a historic step towards the protection of children’s rights”

Florence Ngalula appointed as president of the specialized court for children Kinshasa/Kinkole

In a public ceremony which took place this Friday, September 22, Florence Ngalula was officially inaugurated as the new president of the Kinshasa/Kinkole specialized children’s court. This historic appointment marks the first time that a woman has occupied this role of president within this jurisdiction.

The swearing-in ceremony took place in the form of a public hearing in the presence of municipal authorities, the administrative body of the jurisdiction, magistrates, members of the family of the new president and minor children, the main people concerned by this jurisdiction. Florence Ngalula, who has been a magistrate in the children’s court for almost 10 years, has sworn to uphold the law and respect the country’s constitution throughout her mandate.

Faced with the significant challenges linked to this jurisdiction, Florence Ngalula is called upon to surpass her male predecessors and improve the situation of children in difficulty and children in conflict with the law. As a mother herself, she is expected to do everything possible to protect and improve the condition of children in these complex situations.

It is important to remember that the Children’s Court (TPE) is a court specifically dedicated to minors who have broken the law. Its role is to do justice by taking into account the particularities of these young people in order to facilitate their reintegration and contribute to their development.

With the appointment of Florence Ngalula, it is a further step towards recognition of the essential role of women in the judicial sphere in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Let us hope that his presidency brings significant progress for the rights and protections of children within the Kinshasa/Kinkole jurisdiction.
