Nagorno-Karabakh: a rekindled conflict, massive population displacements

Nagorno-Karabakh, a region plagued by conflict for many years, continues to make headlines. Over the past few days, Azerbaijan launched a lightning offensive and won a military victory against Armenian separatists, taking control of the region. This situation has led to the displacement of many residents of Nagorno-Karabakh, who fear being victims of ethnic cleansing. Among these refugees, a first group was able to reach Armenia on Sunday, where a reception center was set up to welcome them.

The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh remains tense, with ongoing operations aimed at restoring full control of the region by Azerbaijan. The demilitarization of Armenian secessionist forces was also announced by Azerbaijan, which wishes to reintegrate the Armenian inhabitants of Nagorno-Karabakh as equal citizens. For its part, Armenia is calling for a United Nations mission to be sent to the region to monitor the humanitarian and security situation on the ground.

Faced with this dramatic situation, many countries have expressed their concern and called for a peaceful settlement of the conflict. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted the United States’ deep concern for the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh in a phone call with the Armenian Prime Minister. For its part, Armenia called on the international community to take measures to protect the human rights of the inhabitants of Nagorno-Karabakh.

In this context, it is essential to closely monitor developments in the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh and support efforts aimed at finding a peaceful and lasting solution to this conflict. The protection of human rights and the security of civilian populations must be at the heart of the concerns of the international community.

In conclusion, Nagorno-Karabakh continues to experience unrest and population displacement due to the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenian separatists. It is essential to remain attentive to this situation and support initiatives aimed at protecting the human rights of people in the region and finding a peaceful solution to the conflict.
