“Formol on food in Cameroon: a dangerous practice that persists despite the government’s efforts”

The use of formalin on food in Cameroon remains a matter of concern, despite efforts by the government to put an end to it. This practice consists of spraying formalin on fruits, vegetables, meat and fish, with the aim of making them ripen or prolonging their conservation.

Doctors are sounding the alarm about the dangers of this practice. Indeed, formalin is a carcinogenic substance which can cause respiratory problems, severe vesicular lesions, or even illnesses in the stomach, intestines and kidneys.

Despite the seizures made by the authorities, formalin still remains present in the markets. Sellers use it clandestinely, spraying the substance discreetly on food, without consumers being aware.

This worrying situation is pushing health professionals to encourage consumers to opt for natural and organic products. Dr Polain Nzobeuh, biologist therapist, recommends purchasing products directly from growers, to ensure their freshness and quality.

It is also advisable to be wary of foods that have spent the night at the market, and to make your purchases as early as possible to ensure the freshness of the products. Growing your own food is another way to reduce your dependence on market produce.

The Cameroonian government has undertaken a campaign to raise public awareness of the dangers of formalin and intensify controls to reduce its use. However, there is still a way to go to completely eliminate this practice and ensure food security for all.

In conclusion, it is essential to remain vigilant about the use of formalin on food and to adopt a more responsible approach by favoring natural and organic products. Consumer health must be a priority and it is essential to support initiatives to end this harmful practice.
