“The international community mobilized to counter gangs in Haiti: a multinational police force in preparation”

The security situation in Haiti is deteriorating a little more every day, pushing Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry to launch an urgent appeal to the international community to act. Indeed, the gangs plaguing the country continue to sow terror, committing kidnappings, looting, arsons and many other criminal acts. Faced with this alarming situation, several countries have committed to forming an international police force to help restore security in Haiti.

According to the information reported, between 10 and 12 countries have offered their concrete support for this security support mission. Jamaica, the Bahamas and Antigua and Barbuda are among the countries that have announced their participation. Separately, Kenya volunteered to lead this force and offered to provide 1,000 security force personnel. The United States, for its part, said it would provide significant logistical support, but does not plan to send ground security forces at this time.

The establishment of this multinational force will, however, depend on the approval of the UN Security Council, although it will not be under the UN flag. A resolution prepared by the United States and Ecuador will be discussed next week at the UN, and already has strong support. The objective of this force will be to provide operational support to the Haitian police, ensure the security of critical installations and traffic routes, as well as strengthen the police in the long term.

However, it is important to emphasize that this support mission cannot replace the necessary political progress in Haiti. Indeed, the country is facing multiple crises, both politically and humanitarianly. The Haitian government therefore needs comprehensive international support to overcome these challenges and restore stability to the country.

In conclusion, the establishment of an international police force to help Haiti deal with gang violence is more than necessary. Offers of support from several countries as well as logistical support from the United States are encouraging signs. It now remains to obtain the approval of the UN Security Council and to act quickly to relieve the Haitian people who have suffered for too long the misdeeds of criminal gangs. This security support will be an important step towards stability and security in the country.
