The importance of citizen awareness for the current electoral process in the DRC
Kinshasa, Thursday September 21, 2023 – In a consultation framework bringing together the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), civil society, NGOs, religious denominations and the media, the President of the CENI, Denis KADIMA KAZADI, underlined the importance of conveying a positive message to raise awareness among as many people as possible about the current electoral process.
In his speech, Denis KADIMA KAZADI recalled that the outcome of this process was the organization of elections, the first phase of which is scheduled for December 20, 2023. He thus urged each member of society to play their part and to adopt civic behavior, putting into practice democratic values such as appeasement.
The CENI recognizes the key role of civil society, NGOs, religious denominations and the media in the electoral education of voters. Thanks to their initiatives and activities, voters will be able to go to the polling stations well informed and prepared to make their conscious choice.
The election of municipal councilors in provincial capitals is of particular importance, because it contributes to the establishment of progressive decentralization in the DRC. This is why Denis KADIMA KAZADI encouraged all stakeholders to support their respective candidates, while adopting appropriate behavior to guarantee peaceful elections.
However, the President of the CENI warned election observers, calling on them to remain neutral and respect a strict code of conduct. Non-partisan citizen observation of elections is a necessary practice to build trust and transparency in the process. It is crucial not to confuse this engagement with political activism, which can compromise the neutrality and objectivity of observers.
Denis KADIMA KAZADI also wanted to reassure about the progress of the CENI’s logistical preparations. Despite some rumors of a delay in obtaining the necessary funds, he affirmed that orders were in progress and that the manufacturing of the equipment was progressing. He called for not letting these rumors discourage citizen participation, stressing that low turnout in elections was often the result of misinformation and disengagement.
In conclusion, Denis KADIMA KAZADI launched an appeal for patriotism and the responsibility of everyone in this electoral process. He recalled that the success of the elections depended on the active participation of all, voter awareness and respect for democratic principles. The CENI works tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of the process and counts on the support of all stakeholders involved.
