Repression persists in Iran: commemoration of killed demonstrators, a courageous act of resistance

Commemoration of the death of demonstrators in Iran: oppression continues

Since the start of the “Women, Live Freedom” movement in September 2022, the families of the killed demonstrators have faced relentless repression from the Iranian authorities. With each death anniversary approaching, attempts at commemoration are systematically hampered, with arrests, death threats and direct attacks by security forces.

In recent days, tensions have reached an extreme level, with the attack on the Heidary family home. Javad Heidary, a 40-year-old protester, was killed by the Iranian regime’s security forces on September 22, 2022. His family wanted to pay tribute to him by commemorating his death, but the authorities reacted with unprecedented violence.

A cohort of cars and law enforcement forces surrounded the Heidary family village, blocking the roads leading to the village and the cemetery where Javad Heidary is buried. The village’s internet connection was also cut to prevent any communication with the outside world. Security forces even used tear gas and live ammunition to attack the family’s home, injuring several members, including children.

These attacks are unfortunately not isolated. The Iranian authorities are trying by all means to silence the families and loved ones of the deceased demonstrators. House arrests, death threats, summons: nothing is spared for those who dare to commemorate the death of their loved ones and express their opposition to the regime.

The videos and testimonies shared on social networks bear witness to the continued violence and oppression to which these families are victims. The images of these courageous protesters who dared to defy security forces to honor the memory of their loved ones are poignant reminders of the need to fight for freedom and fundamental rights in Iran.

While these commemorations are bloodily repressed, it is essential that the international community remains attentive to the situation in Iran and strongly condemns these abuses. Human rights must not be violated, and the families of protesters deserve support and solidarity in their quest for justice.

It is time to end oppression and work for an Iran where freedom of expression and human dignity are respected. The commemoration of the deaths of the demonstrators is much more than an act of memory, it is a symbol of resistance and hope for a better future.
