Iranian power prevents commemorations of killed demonstrators
Since September 16, Iranian authorities have stepped up efforts to prevent families from paying tribute to protesters killed during the Women Live Freedom movement. These commemorations, which mark the anniversaries of the deaths of these demonstrators, could potentially trigger new demonstrations against the regime.
Recently, the family of Javad Heidary, a protester killed in September 2022, was the victim of a violent attack by Iranian security forces. Vehicles and law enforcement surrounded the family’s village and blocked roads leading to the cemetery where Javad Heidary is buried. Security forces even used tear gas and live ammunition, injuring several family members, including children.
This attack is unfortunately not an isolated case. The Iranian authorities are increasing house arrests, threats and summons to prevent families from commemorating the death of their loved ones. Many families even announced their intentions to hold commemoration ceremonies, but were ultimately forced to cancel under pressure from the regime.
These attempts at silence on the part of the Iranian government aim to prevent popular mobilization against the regime. Since the protests began in September 2022, each day marks the anniversary of the death of a protester killed by security forces. The regime fears that these commemorations will rekindle the flame of protest and lead to new protests throughout the country.
Despite the government’s efforts to stifle dissenting voices, the families of the slain protesters continue to fight for justice. Social networks play a crucial role in the dissemination of testimonies and information on the repression carried out by the regime. Despite threats and pressure, these families are not discouraged and continue to fight for truth and freedom.
The situation in Iran highlights the repression exercised by authoritarian regimes against popular movements. This reminds us of the importance of freedom of expression and citizen mobilization to defend fundamental rights and advance democracy. It is essential to support oppressed people and make their voices heard, even in the face of adversity.
