“Elections in the DRC: the CENI mobilizes civil society for credible and inclusive elections”

“The closing of the consultation frameworks of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) marked the end of a series of sessions aimed at engaging the components of civil society in the preparation of the elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). President of the CENI, Denis Kadima, stressed the importance of not giving credence to information disseminated by the “enemies” of the elections and of using only the official communication channels of the CENI.

The enthusiasm of the participants during these discussions with political parties, civil society and different segments of the population demonstrates the interest in the elections in the DRC. After more than 30 years without municipal elections, the Congolese now aspire to quality, transparent and inclusive elections.

Denis Kadima affirmed that the CENI wishes to contribute significantly to the positive development of democracy in the DRC and make the elections a moment of celebration rather than a moment of mourning. He also highlighted the importance of women, youth, persons with disabilities and indigenous peoples as voters and encouraged their active participation in the electoral process.

The CENI plans to raise public awareness on the electoral environment, the legal framework for elections and the operation of the Electronic Voting Device (DEV). It counts on the mobilization of these different components of society to contribute to the evolution of democracy in the DRC.

Denis Kadima insisted on the fact that the CENI has official communication channels and called on participants not to give credence to the information circulating on social networks and not to propagate it. He encouraged women, young people, people with disabilities and indigenous peoples to realize their responsibility in holding credible, transparent, inclusive and peaceful elections.

This closure of the consultation frameworks testifies to the civic commitment of the Congolese to the electoral process and their desire for a better future for their country. The CENI continues its preparations and hopes that the elections will be a proud moment for Congolese democracy.”
