Continued uncertainty over reopening of Tanganyika Provincial Assembly: Activists worry about transparency and democracy in the province

Tanganyika Provincial Assembly: Concerns persist over its reopening

Civil society activists in Tanganyika province express concern over the closure of the Provincial Assembly, which remains uncertain whether it will reopen for the September session. This decision, taken by the Minister of the Interior Pierre Lumbwe, aimed to prevent disturbances to public order.

With the September session of the Provincial Assembly mainly devoted to budgetary matters, activists fear that the provincial executive can no longer be held accountable in the absence of oversight of these deliberations.

A fact-finding mission was commissioned by the Senate last July in order to restore the activity of this deliberative body. However, activists claim to be unaware of the progress of this mission and feel left out in the process of resolving the institutional crisis.

For their part, the national deputies of Tanganyika tried to find a solution to this institutional crisis with a view to reopening the Provincial Assembly. Unfortunately, their efforts have remained unanswered until now.

This closure of the Provincial Assembly was decided on May 12, following an institutional crisis which pitted the provincial government against this deliberative body.

It is therefore crucial that steps are taken to restore the functioning of the Tanganyika Provincial Assembly. Civil society and citizens are eagerly awaiting the reopening of this decision-making body to ensure transparent and democratic governance in the province.
