“CLPA: The reference conference for sustainable land governance in Africa and the acceleration of the AfCFTA”

The Conference on Land Policies in Africa (CLPA) is a major event which will be held in Addis Ababa next November. Organized by the African Center for Land Policy, in partnership with the Ethiopian government, this fifth edition of the conference aims to promote sustainable land governance in Africa, with the aim of accelerating the implementation of the Free Trade Area African Continental (AfCFTA).

Under the theme “Promoting sustainable land governance in Africa to accelerate the implementation of the AfCFTA”, the CLPA will bring together experts from government, academia, research, traditional authorities, the private sector and development partners . The objective of this conference is to deepen engagement and build capacity for the development, implementation and monitoring of land policies in Africa, promoting dialogue, partnerships and resources for better land governance on the continent.

The CLPA will take place in both a hybrid format, with virtual and physical sessions in Addis Ababa. This will allow broader participation of stakeholders, while respecting physical distancing measures and constraints linked to the pandemic.

The choice of the theme of this edition is particularly relevant, because it is in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and aims to accelerate the implementation of the AfCFTA. By fostering more transparent, inclusive and accountable land governance, the aim is to maximize the benefits of the AfCFTA for African citizens and contribute to the achievement of the continent’s aspirations.

The various sub-themes that will be discussed at the conference include best practices in developing land policies to improve cross-border trade in Africa, establishing effective land administration institutions, promoting land management practices, inclusive and transparent land governance, as well as monitoring and evaluation of effective land policies.
