“Celebration of the International Day of Peace in the DRC: the UN calls for the fight against disinformation and hate speech”

The celebration of the International Day of Peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was marked by the call from UNESCO representative Isaias Barreto Da Rosa to combat disinformation and hate speech. In a speech delivered in Kinshasa, he stressed the importance of promoting living together and mutual respect despite cultural and religious differences.

In a desire to promote peace, Isaias Barreto Da Rosa also encouraged the involvement of women in peace-seeking initiatives in the DRC. Recognizing the challenges facing the country, he stressed that the return of peace to the eastern part of the DRC would contribute to the sustainable development of the entire nation.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Peter Kazadi, reaffirmed the government’s efforts to restore peace and security in the east of the country, where Rwandan aggression under the cover of the M23 persists. He stressed that peace in this region was crucial to enable the sustainable development of the DRC.

The International Day of Peace, under the theme “Action in favor of peace: our ambitions for sustainable objectives”, was commemorated by MONUSCO and the agencies of the United Nations system in the DRC. This day, established by the UN General Assembly in 1981, is an opportunity to recall the importance of peace in the world.

The DRC’s commitment to peace is not limited to this specific day, but is a constant struggle to overcome internal and external challenges that hinder the stability of the country. Promoting mutual respect, eradicating misinformation and the active participation of women are essential aspects of this quest for a peaceful and prosperous future.

In conclusion, the speeches delivered during the celebration of the International Day of Peace in the DRC highlighted the importance of combating disinformation and hate speech, promoting living together and promoting the participation of women in peace initiatives. These efforts are essential to restore peace in the east of the country in the face of aggression and to ensure sustainable development for the entire Congolese nation.
