The DRC is preparing the ground to host the first manufacturing plant for precursors of electric batteries, batteries and electric vehicles in the province of Haut-Katanga. This announcement was made during the economic forum “The Global Africa Business Initiative” which took place on the sidelines of the 78th UN General Assembly in New York.
The project, led by the company “ARISE”, will require a total investment of 30 billion US dollars. According to Julien Paluku Kahongya, Congolese Minister of Industry, this factory aims to capture more than 7 trillion dollars by 2035. This initiative represents an exceptional opportunity for the development of the battery industry in Africa, and the DRC is determined to make it a regional economic flagship.
The participation of several members of the Congolese government as well as financial partners and representatives of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) during this forum demonstrates the commitment and importance given to this project.
This manufacturing plant for the precursors of electric batteries, batteries and electric vehicles represents a significant step forward in the global energy transition. The rise of electric vehicles and growing demand for batteries requires sufficient production of these key components.
The location of the factory in the Haut-Katanga province in the DRC is strategic, because this region has many mineral resources necessary for the manufacture of batteries, such as cobalt and lithium. The DRC is also one of the main global suppliers of these raw materials essential for the manufacture of batteries.
This project will not only contribute to job creation and economic development in the DRC and the region, but it will also strengthen Africa’s energy independence by promoting the use of electric vehicles and locally produced batteries.
The establishment of this factory therefore constitutes a major step forward in the economic diversification of the DRC and in the development of its natural resources. International cooperation and financial investment will be essential to realize this ambitious project and contribute to Africa’s sustainable growth.
It is important to emphasize that this initiative is part of an ecological and sustainable approach, promoting the transition to a green economy and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. By supporting the development of the battery industry in Africa, the DRC and its partners contribute to the fight against climate change and the preservation of the environment..
In conclusion, the announcement of the future manufacturing plant for precursors of electric batteries, batteries and electric vehicles in the Haut-Katanga province in the DRC marks an important step in the economic and environmental transformation of the region. This ambitious project opens new perspectives for the DRC and Africa in the sector of renewable energies and sustainable mobility. It now remains to realize this vision through concrete actions and sustained investments.
