Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame recently announced his candidacy for a fourth term in his country’s presidential election scheduled for next year. This announcement sparked many reactions and raised questions about the political future of Rwanda.

Paul Kagame, former rebel leader, has been in power since the end of the 1994 genocide. His management of the country has been marked by controversial reforms, including constitutional amendments that allowed him to extend his mandate and could allow him to remain in power until 2034.

The announcement of his candidacy for a fourth term did not come as a surprise, as he had already expressed his intention to run for “20 more years.” However, this raises concerns about democracy and freedom of expression in Rwanda.

President Kagame is often criticized for governing in a climate of fear and stifling of dissent. Several human rights groups have denounced human rights violations and restrictions on freedom of expression in the country.

A striking example is the case of Paul Rusesabagina, hero of the film “Hotel Rwanda” and virulent critic of President Kagame. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison for “terrorism” in controversial circumstances. His arrest was described as a kidnapping by his family.

Rwanda is ranked 131st out of 180 countries in the 2023 Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index. This position highlights concerns about press freedom and democracy in the country.

While Rwanda is often presented as a stable and developing country, it is essential to remain vigilant about the political situation and human rights violations. President Kagame’s bid for a fourth term raises questions about democracy and governance in the country.

It is important to closely monitor developments in Rwanda and continue to promote the principles of democracy, freedom and respect for human rights. Only an open and inclusive society can guarantee a prosperous future for the country and its citizens.
