“The 2018 elections in the DRC: controversy around the results and political agreements”

The 2018 elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo continue to be talked about. While the results have been contested since their publication by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) and confirmation by the Constitutional Court, debates have intensified in recent days.

It was Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi who opened the ball by affirming, from New York where he is staying for the United Nations General Assembly, that he had legitimately won the 2018 elections. He thus refuted accusations that he had concluded a fraudulent agreement with his predecessor, Joseph Kabila.

Félix Tshisekedi declared that he had indeed met representatives of Joseph Kabila, but that these exchanges were not aimed at negotiating power. He specified that a governance agreement had been signed between his coalition, Cape for Change (CACH), and Kabila’s Common Front for Congo (FCC).

The Congolese President also called on those who contest the results, in particular Martin Fayulu, who came in second place, to provide evidence of fraud and name those responsible.

These statements come as Corneille Nangaa Yobeluo, former president of the CENI, recently announced his exile to Ghana, claiming to have information on the political agreement between Kabila and Tshisekedi. He also claimed to have received threats from certain executives of the ruling regime.

This new controversy raises questions about the legitimacy of the results of the 2018 elections in the DRC and provokes strong reactions within the Congolese population as well as the international community.

It is essential to shed light on these accusations of fraud and political agreement in order to ensure the transparency and legitimacy of the democratic process in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The truth at the polls must be established independently and impartially to preserve the confidence of citizens and guarantee the stability of the country.

In conclusion, the debates on the 2018 elections in the DRC do not seem ready to die down. The controversy surrounding the results and possible political agreements continues to raise concerns about the legitimacy of those in power. It is crucial that the truth is established and that measures are taken to strengthen the confidence of the Congolese people in the democratic process. Only total transparency will make it possible to resolve this crisis and preserve peace and stability in the DRC.
