Appointment of Major General Peter Cirimwami: New interim governor of North Kivu
In a recent announcement by the Chief of Army Staff, it was stated that Major General Peter Cirimwami had been appointed Commander of Military Operations. However, it appears that this information is incorrect. Indeed, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Interior, Security and Customary Affairs, Peter Kazadi, went to Goma and confirmed that Major General Cirimwami was in fact appointed interim governor of North Kivu.
This appointment comes following the recall of Lieutenant-General Constant Ndima to Kinshasa for consultations. Indeed, this reminder follows the massacre of civilians during an anti-MONUSCO demonstration which took place last August. Interim Governor Cirimwami therefore takes over and will have to ensure the continuity of administration in the province of North Kivu.
Upon his arrival in Goma, Deputy Prime Minister Peter Kazadi held a meeting with members of the provincial security committee. This meeting took place at the governor’s office and aimed to discuss the measures to be taken to guarantee the security and well-being of the population in the province.
This appointment raises many questions and expectations regarding the management of the province of North Kivu. Major General Cirimwami will have to face many challenges, including ensuring the security of residents in an area marked by armed conflicts and civil unrest.
It should be noted that Major General Cirimwami is an experienced officer in the Congolese army. His appointment as interim governor of North Kivu is a sign of confidence on the part of the authorities and suggests the desire to put in place an effective administration to resolve the persistent problems in the region.
It remains to be seen how Major General Cirimwami will carry out his new duties and what measures he will take to ensure the security and stability of the North Kivu province. Residents are impatiently awaiting concrete actions and lasting solutions to end the violence and suffering they have endured for too long.
