Timbuktu attack: Survivors stranded in Rharous in critical conditions for more than ten days
Since the deadly attack on the passenger transport boat in Timbuktu on September 7, 2023, claimed by the Support Group for Islam and Muslims in Mali, survivors have found themselves stuck in the town of Rharous, in the Timbuktu region. . The situation is critical for these survivors who are deprived of any assistance and hope.
However, local authorities had promised to evacuate the survivors by escorting them by land. But so far, no concrete action has been put in place. The survivors therefore live in unbearable conditions, with sick people among them. They became anxious and desperate at the lack of support from the Malian state.
“The state promised us that it would come and pick us up by road. But a week has passed and we have seen nothing, heard nothing. People are tired of waiting,” testifies one of the survivors, disillusioned. Around 200 people have been stranded in Rharous since the attack, with no prospect of concrete relief.
Faced with this critical situation, survivors depend mainly on the help of local authorities and young people in the region who are mobilizing to support them. However, this remains insufficient to meet the growing needs of survivors. Many of them are sick and live in extreme distress, gradually losing their morale and their hope of returning home.
This situation raises many questions about the capacity of the Malian state to protect its citizens and ensure their security. Terrorist attacks continue to hit the country, leaving many victims and survivors abandoned to their fate. It is imperative that rapid evacuation measures are put in place to save these survivors and provide them with the support they desperately need.
