The previous article informs us about the expiration of the ultimatum of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) towards the military junta in Niger. This ultimatum aimed to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum in office and restore constitutional order after the coup d’état of July 26.
According to information, a possible military intervention by ECOWAS forces is not immediately planned. The current president of ECOWAS, Bola Tinubu, did not obtain the support of Nigerian senators for such an operation. However, troop contributing countries like Nigeria, Benin, Ivory Coast and Senegal are preparing in case of intervention.
Despite the expiration of the ultimatum, ECOWAS continues discussions and negotiations with the military junta. Some officials in the region have tried to resolve the situation peacefully, seeking help from former Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou, who is believed to have influence over junta leader General Abdourahamane Tiani.
ECOWAS is also considering holding a summit of heads of state, either in person or virtually, to discuss the situation and possible military intervention. Some countries have already announced the number of troops they could provide, with Nigeria leading the way with around 5,000 troops who can be mobilized quickly.
To allay the concerns of certain countries and encourage broader support, ECOWAS specifies that the intervention could be targeted and not generalized. The main objective remains the reestablishment of the institutions of the Republic, even if this can be done without the use of force.
Along with these developments, it is mentioned that a US delegation may also visit Niamey, which could indicate additional interest and support from the United States in this situation.
In conclusion, although the ECOWAS ultimatum has expired, a military intervention has not yet been triggered. Discussions and negotiations continue, in the hope of finding a peaceful solution to this political crisis in Niger. It remains to be seen what the next step in this matter will be.
