Consequences of international sanctions on the Nigerien population after the coup d’état

The coup d’état which took place in Niger more than a week ago continues to have its consequences felt by the population. Indeed, international sanctions are increasing, notably those imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the World Bank. These restrictive measures are already starting to affect the daily lives of Nigeriens.

One of the first consequences of sanctions is the disruption of electricity supplies. Power outages are increasing, causing inconvenience for residents who depend on electricity for their daily activities.

But the most worrying consequences concern the supply of food. Due to sanctions that limit exports and imports, the prices of basic necessities increase, and sometimes even become unavailable. Nigeriens are facing price increases for foodstuffs such as rice, pasta and vegetables, making it difficult for many households to access affordable food.

In the country’s economic capital, Maradi, we even observe residents stocking up on rice and pasta for fear of not being able to obtain them in the future. The price increases are significant, with increases of several thousand CFA francs in just a few days. In other regions of the country, some food products are starting to run out due to Niger’s dependence on neighboring countries for their supplies.

In addition, the suspension of payments from the World Bank to Niger is worsening the country’s economic situation. This suspension represents a considerable loss of revenue for the Nigerien government, as the country relies heavily on international aid to finance its development programs. Other European countries have also suspended their development aid, which amplifies the financial difficulties encountered by the country.

These international sanctions risk having a significant impact on the Nigerien population, which largely depends on international aid and access to affordable food. It is therefore urgent to find solutions to mitigate the consequences of these sanctions and ensure the well-being of the Nigerien people.

As the economic and social situation becomes increasingly precarious, it is essential that the international community commits to finding lasting solutions to support Niger and its population in this difficult period. Humanitarian aid, financial support and accompanying measures are essential to guarantee the food security and well-being of Nigeriens.
