The temporary suspension of Congo Airways activities: a shock wave in the DRC
September 11 will remain a sadly memorable date for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Indeed, the national airline, Congo Airways, announced the temporary suspension of its activities, causing a shock wave in the country. This decision, justified as a security measure in accordance with IATA standards, marks a difficult turning point for the flagship of Congolese aviation.
The DRC is experiencing exponential growth in demand for domestic travel, but supply is becoming increasingly scarce. The non-operation of international lines has a high cost for the country, allowing foreign companies to take advantage of the situation. Faced with this reality, President Félix TSHISEKEDI made the relaunch of Congo Airways a priority for the government.
Unfortunately, there were many obstacles in the company’s path. Promising partnerships, such as that with Kenya Airways for the rental of Embraer E190 aircraft, have not been renewed, limiting Congo Airways’ capacity for action. In addition, a controversial transaction with the Brazilian manufacturer Embraer, for the purchase of four new planes, raised concerns about the management of the company.
In this difficult context, a glimmer of hope could come from another project: Air Congo. In partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, this new national airline presents itself as an alternative solution. Inspired by Asky’s successful model, it could help fill the void left by the suspension of Congo Airways’ activities. However, the start date of Air Congo operations remains undetermined.
In the meantime, the temporary suspension of Congo Airways leaves a void in the Congolese sky. The company’s imposing planes will no longer take to the skies, leaving travelers and the country in a period of uncertainty. It is now up to the authorities and players in the aviation sector to find sustainable solutions to revive Congolese aviation and meet the growing mobility needs in the country. The rest of the Congo Airways adventure remains to be written, and let us hope that this difficult chapter does not mark the end of its story.
