New deadly attack linked to CODECO militiamen in Ituri, Democratic Republic of Congo
A new attack attributed to CODECO militiamen took place this Sunday, August 27 in the village of Gonu, located 74 kilometers from the center of Tchomia, in the province of Ituri in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This attack unfortunately left fourteen dead, including a soldier from the Armed Forces of the DRC, four CODECO attackers and nine innocent civilians. In addition, several people were injured, including two soldiers and two civilians, and were transferred to Munganga to receive the necessary treatment.
This tragedy occurs while the state of siege is still in force in the province of Ituri, an exceptional measure decreed by the Head of State since May 2021 to fight against the negative forces plaguing the region. Despite the efforts of the DRC armed forces to keep the situation under control, it is obvious that the threat from CODECO militiamen persists.
This attack once again highlights the urgency of finding a lasting solution to the security situation in the Ituri region. CODECO militiamen, known for their violence and destructive actions, continue to sow terror among civilians, causing massive displacement of populations and exacerbating already existing tensions in the region.
It is essential that the Congolese authorities strengthen their efforts to neutralize these armed groups and guarantee the security of local populations. This involves coordination between the different actors, improving the capacities of the Congolese army, but also through development and reconstruction measures to restore hope to communities affected by violence.
The international community also has an important role to play in resolving this crisis. It must financially and logistically support stabilization and reconstruction efforts in the DRC, but also exert diplomatic pressure on regional actors involved in the conflict in order to promote the peaceful resolution of disputes.
It is crucial to end this recurring cycle of violence and instability in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which continues to devastate lives and compromise the country’s development. The Congolese population deserves to live in peace and security, and it is our duty to do everything possible to achieve this objective.
