National Office of Fisheries and Aquaculture in the Democratic Republic of Congo: an ambitious vision to boost the sector

Since its appointment by the Head of State Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, the team of the National Office of Fisheries and Aquaculture (ONPA) is now at work. Under the direction of the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Adrien Bokele Djema, this technical body is entrusted with a crucial mission: to revive the fishing and aquaculture sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and ensure the food self-sufficiency of the country.

ONPA, which is part of the reforms undertaken by the government, aims to increase fishing and aquaculture production, modernize fishing infrastructure and promote the processing and marketing of products. As a key player in the value chain, he is responsible for organizing the supply of inputs, collecting and distributing products across the national territory.

The commissioning of ONPA was welcomed by Henriette Wamu, president of the board of directors, who expressed her gratitude to the Head of State for this appointment. She assures that the team will fully invest in meeting the expectations of the Congolese population and implementing the vision of the President of the Republic.

This desire to revive the fishing and aquaculture sector in the DRC is an essential step to ensure the country’s food self-sufficiency. By exploiting fishing resources sustainably and modernizing practices, the DRC can not only meet the needs of its population, but also generate economic income and promote the development of the sector.

The challenges are numerous, but ONPA is determined to meet these challenges and actively contribute to the transformation of the fishing and aquaculture sector in the DRC. Through effective resource management, the promotion of good practices and the establishment of adequate infrastructure, the country can capitalize on its immense aquatic potential to achieve true food sovereignty.

The involvement of all players in the sector, whether fishermen, breeders or national and international partners, is crucial for the success of this ambitious vision. By working together, sharing knowledge and putting in place coherent policies and strategies, the DRC can become a major player in fisheries and aquaculture in Africa.

ONPA is therefore an essential tool to realize this vision and meet the challenges of the fishing and aquaculture sector in the DRC. With a dedicated, motivated and competent team, this technical body is ready to implement the necessary actions to ensure sustainable and inclusive development of this crucial sector for the economy and the well-being of the Congolese population.
