The consequences of the latest eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano continue to weigh on the lives of displaced and affected people in the region. In the territory of Nyirangongo, in North Kivu, more than 200 families find themselves in a precarious situation, living in difficult conditions on different sites.
A glaring example is visible in the Kayembe site, where thousands of displaced people and victims require assistance in terms of food and shelter. The families who remained on this site testify to the wear and tear of their tarpaulins, received several months ago. With the imminent arrival of rains, the deterioration of these tarpaulins leaves them without adequate protection. Faced with this situation, Etienne Bosenibamwe, coordinator of the NGO Action d’animation pour le développement des paysans (ACADEPA), is launching an urgent appeal to the government and its partners to provide emergency tarpaulins to these families.
Joel Ndagana, head of the provincial civil protection service in North Kivu, indicates that pleas are underway to assist these displaced people. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is also planning a distribution of 180 tonnes of food and non-food items as part of a European Union airlift.
However, despite these initiatives, the situation remains critical for these families who have been living in uncertainty for more than 10 months, without having benefited from adequate assistance. It is imperative that concrete actions be put in place quickly to respond to the urgent needs of these displaced and disaster victims.
Beyond this specific situation, this example highlights the reality of the humanitarian crises facing many regions around the world. It is essential to raise public awareness and mobilize the necessary resources to help the most vulnerable people in these emergency situations.
In conclusion, it is crucial to put in place solid and sustainable assistance mechanisms to support displaced and affected families. Collaboration between the government, humanitarian partners and the international community is essential to help these populations rebuild their lives and regain a certain stability.
