“General Salifou Mody on diplomatic tour: seeking support from military regimes in the region”

General Salifou Mody, number two of the National Council for the Protection of the Fatherland (CNSP) in Niger, continues his diplomatic tour after the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum. After visiting Mali, he went to Burkina Faso with the aim of seeking support from the military regimes in the region. His visit to Ouagadougou was marked by a meeting with the president of the Burkinabe transition, Ibrahim Traoré.

During this meeting, General Mody expressed his gratitude to Burkina Faso for its support in the context of the sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following the coup d’état in Niger . He also stressed the importance of working together to prevent Niger from becoming a new Libya, referring to the Western military intervention that led to the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Although General Mody did not give precise details on the actions planned to deal with the situation and secure the populations of the two countries, he stressed the importance of coordination between Niger and Burkina Faso.

This visit underlines the desire of the Nigerien putschists to strengthen their regional alliances to face international pressure, in particular that of ECOWAS. General Mody’s visit to Mali and Burkina Faso also shows that certain military regimes in the region are ready to support the Nigerien putschists, calling into question the effectiveness of the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS.

The situation in Niger remains volatile, with political tensions and uncertainty about the country’s future. It is essential to closely monitor developments and the responses of countries in the region in order to understand the regional and international implications of this crisis.
