Free maternity in Kinshasa: a crucial measure to save lives

Free maternity in Kinshasa: A measure that is gradually being implemented

Since September 5, free maternity and care for newborns has been in effect in the city of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A measure which aims to facilitate access to care for pregnant women and reduce maternal and infant mortality. The first results of this policy are starting to be felt, with health centers already implementing it.

During a visit by Radio Okapi reporters to certain health centers in Kinshasa, it was noted that some of them already offer free maternity services. Doctor Ghislain Kabange, director of the Bangu health center in the commune of Ngaliema, confirms the implementation of this measure in his establishment. Women who arrive to give birth are taken care of at no additional cost: “Free maternity care is effective. As I speak to you, there are women who are in the hands of midwives and others who have given birth. We took care of them for free.”

Good news for women who were able to benefit from these services without having to pay money. This is particularly the case of Ms. Marie, who recounts her experience: “I came to give birth and I was informed on site that maternity is now free. I went to the checkout. Then the doctors asked me to keep my money.” A significant saving for women who have to face numerous expenses related to pregnancy and childbirth.

However, not all health centers are yet ready to implement this measure. Some establishments are still finalizing the final settings. According to officials, efforts are being made to ensure that free maternity care is generalized throughout the city.

In total, 320 health centers and 50 general reference hospitals are affected by the implementation of free maternity in Kinshasa, according to the Ministry of Public Health. To facilitate access to these services, the ministry recommends that the population type *151# on their mobile phones to recognize the hospitals participating in this program.

This measure of free maternity in Kinshasa is a significant step forward in improving access to health care for pregnant women. It contributes to the reduction of maternal and infant mortality, and thus contributes to improving the health of populations. Let us hope that this initiative will quickly become widespread throughout the country, to offer all women the right to maternity without financial difficulties.
